I love the phrasing that's going around - something like, "I've never been alive before." I've said "I've never been a mom before" to my child for, oh, more than a decade, when we've faced challenging situations. My child always responds with, "I've never been a kid before." All to say, trying and admitting to trying is foundational to being human, at least in my tiny household.
Another small note on how much I adore Vera Brosgol, especially her graphic novel, Be Prepared. I reached out to her on Instagram years ago about some water colors she made of the Oregon coast, and she graciously sold me one. It's been in an office, and now hangs on my apartment walls. I love the softness and presence of her characters. The true both/and.
I also need to read Leave Me Alone! Whew. I wonder if The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet is anything like the Interrupting Chicken series that's popular.
Sarah, your introductory words were balm for my soul. I have been grumpy of late and feel terrible at how it’s bleeding into our home life and impacting my kid. Thank you for releasing me from some of that guilt (is it ever truly gone?!).
I loved your recommendations but Leave Me Alone definitely resonates with me most right now, ha!
These are the things that I frequently delete, so I'm glad that it was helpful. Hang in there -- you're doing the most important work, and it's hard, but you don't have to be perfect. (Ever.) 🩷
Hooray for the return of the introduction! I love knowing what you are up to and thank you for remaining us that all we have to do is try. Lately I've had to apologize to my kids A LOT so the advice is timely.
Also, I immediately paused my reading and went to track down Leave Me Alone. Last Tuesday we had a snow day (after the 3 day weekend) and I told my kids that I needed 15 minutes in the afternoon, everyone completely ignored the request, and I unraveled. May this book help my kids understand. Also, I'm looking forward to Animals Nobody Loves -- we have a remote controlled tarantula (a gift...) so I think it will be up our alley given the cover. But first, Leave Me Alone!
In that vein, have you read Five Minutes Peace? It always makes me chuckle.
I couldn't agree more, all we can do is try.
Also, great picks. We got The Rooster who Would Not Quit last week at the library and loved it!

She's a gem. I also loved Be Prepared. I'll read anything she writes/creates.

The Rooster Who... is not like Interrupting Chicken. There is more of a story and no interrupting 😊
Thank you!
Animals Nobody Loves looks so right up my alley! I definitely need to check that out.
I really enjoyed it!

Thank you for your introductory words today! I needed to hear them this week 💛
You’re very welcome, Lauren.

I used to not like Five Minutes Peace — until my kids got older and I DEEPLY understood 😂
(Every time I say I’m not going to write introductions anymore, suddenly I have so much to say 🤦🏻♀️)
