Thanks for the recommendations. We read nightly together. I have a 7- and 8-year-old who read at a 4th and 5th grade level. I'm always on the lookout for books they may like but they are still reading books with pictures like Diary of a Wimpy Kid and graphic novels. Do any of these have pictures? My 8-year-old did read Wishtree in class and that one has very few pictures and she liked it a lot.

Hi Alicia! Sheets is a graphic novel; Don't Check Out This Book is not but it does have a ton of graphic elements.

When assessing whether or not your kids *can* read a book, also remember that just because they can handle the "level" doesn't necessarily mean they are ready for the content. I mention this because it can sometimes be a problem for younger children reading middle grade or even YA novels -- they may be ready in a technical sense but not an emotional one (this is even more true for sensitive kiddos), so my advice is to take a look at these titles (any titles) yourself and use your best judgment, since you know your kids best.

Reading together nightly is a gift of a lifetime -- you're doing a great job!

I agree. I try to screen the book summaries and suggested reader ages so that we aren't getting into teenager situations/issues and other things they wouldn't understand. Ran into that with the Five Nights At Freddy's series so I put those on the backburner for when they're teens. We used to 'recap' our reading sessions and I think I'm going to incorporate that again because it has helped us to remember more about what a book is about. Thanks again for the suggestions and I'll check them out to see which would be good for us this summer.

You're totally already on it 😊

At 5 and 7 my children aren't reading independently yet (my eldest reads on her own but then will read portions to me, and we're talking My Weird School books, so I'm there's not a lot of depth there, just dumb jokes) but we do various kinds of "recaps" and always have. I wrote about that back in January, in response to a question from a reader, if you're interested: https://canweread.substack.com/p/notes-from-the-reading-nook-jan-18

I recommend any graphic novel by Raina Telgemeier, especially Guts and Sisters. Her illustrations are great, so are the topics she writes about. My 9-year old has been reading her since last year and she loves it!!

I LOVE the idea of a family book club. Just have to get my 8 year old reading better. Though he said he liked the idea of it too.

There’s time! And who says you couldn’t do a book club with an audiobook, or an early chapter book? There are lots of possibilities, and you can make it your own to fit your family’s needs.
