Love this and the surplus of poetry in kids books! Every time I struggle with poetry, I start to read it out loud and it has an entirely different meaning.

Totally! That’s such a great point (and makes complete sense when you think about the origins of poetry as an oral art).

I have found too that if there is a chance to hear the original author read his or her work it's the biggest game changer. I remember hearing William Carlos Williams read This Is Just To Say and it made all the difference. Or listening to Langston Hughes read April Rain Song. Sometimes I forget that the technology exists to hear certain poems read aloud, it is a different experience than when it lies still on the page.

You’re so welcome. I’m a crazy poetry fan and have experienced so much joy sharing it with my children — I hope you find some titles to explore!

Hope you are feeling less sad by now. Thank you for this “We need silence and rhythm in equal measure — in books and in life — and that’s poetry.” ❤️

Thank you for these recommendations! We are loving Scranimals and even have been drawing our own. The vocabulary in the poems is wonderful.

What a wonderful list! We have our own recommendations for the winter (mostly prose), and we'll be adding more poetry books in the spring.
