I hadn't thought too much about reading poetry to my preschool aged kids until another one of your posts. We all loved it! Excited to add more collections to our library list 💜
There is almost nothing you could say that makes me happier than hearing that you're sharing poetry with your children because of me 🙏 Preschool is the perfect age to introduce poetry!
I love your poetry newsletters—you're so knowledgeable. I'm trying to add to our family library because I noticed we have hardly any poetry books, and this National Geographic one looks perfect. Thanks, Sarah!
My go-to for poetry titles to add to our home library is Thriftbooks. (I mean, Thriftbooks is my go-to for a lot of my used purchases, but since they carry so many out-of-print titles -- and people don't seem to buy a lot of poetry for children -- their prices are rock bottom, and I can almost always find whatever I'm looking for. Last year after I finished a big project, I treated myself to an order of like 25 poetry books, and it was completely delightful.)
Ok thanks for this- I love thrift books too. Want to read more adult poetry as well, I can’t seem to find contemporary poets that I like. I will try your other recommendation as well!
I wouldn’t say these two are contemporary- at least not in an up and coming type of way as both are deceased, but I love Mary Oliver and Wendell Berry. I also recently saw some poems from Emory Hall that I liked…have also read poems from the artist/author Morgan Harper Nichols. Also pretty much any quote from Mr Rogers is poetry to me🤣I’m kind of all over the place, ha!
Yay! I'm so glad. Three is an amazing age to share poetry. I don't know what your little one is into, but when my kiddos were that age, we were obsessed with Digger Dozer Dumper by Hope Vestergaard. I also highly recommend Bedtime for Sweet Creatures by Nikki Grimes and the "Things We..." series by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong (Things We Eat, Things We Feel, Things We Eat...).
Thank you, Sarah! Adding these to the list. We definitely needed a few new books for the rotation because we’re quickly headed toward a half-dozen books at night!
I love your tips on what to look for in an anthology. Also, I didn’t know that one of Billy Collins’ poems was made into a picture book! I must get my hands on it.
Thank you! And yes, I came across the Collins' book somewhat recently and had this moment of dissonance, like HOW could this possible EXIST without my KNOWING it?! (Enjoy!)
These all look so good but Hip Hop for Children is calling to me. Reserved it at the library!
It's so good -- enjoy!

Thanks, Katie! The Nat Geo one is really great.

Maybe I can help -- who are some contemporary poets you *do* like?

This is so lovely! Definitely getting as many as these as possible at the library for my three-year-old. Thank you!
