I think the first book of Vanessa Brantley-Newton’s that I brought home from the library and shared with my eldest daughter at a young age was Grandma’s Purse. I fell in love with it immediately and with good reason: not only did Brantley-Newton’s adorable story capture my heart and entrance my kiddo, her gorgeous, bright, pop-off-the-page illustrations made me feel so cheerful, I wanted more from wherever that came from.
Yes, that one is a gem -- I wish it had come out when my kids were super little, as we could have used it more then. (They don't like my leaving, especially traveling, now, but they are much better able to accept it then they were when they were tiny.)
It makes the leaving so much harder for us too. And the coming back. My kids are more needy when I get back. "Everyone wants mommy!" as my son's kindergarten teacher said the other day at a tough dropoff...But I like how that book frames the coming back too.
What a lovely interview with an amazing artist. Thank you!
Great interview. We love MAMA'S WORK SHOES (learned about it here). It has helped my kids process me leaving for work trips. I'll check out her books.

Always appreciate your supportive comments, Sara!
