Caleb and I loved “Hans Brinker, or The Silver Skates”. It’s a wonderful story.

So glad to hear this, Tim! I loved that book as a kid.

Love this list!! And have to thank you because I was just a mystery reader for my daughter's K class and they LOVED Leave Me Alone! and A Big Bed for Little Snow 😊 (My other read was The Great Fuzz Frenzy, which they got a kick out of!)

That's so great!

What a great list! I need to make my way to the library for a few that I haven’t read before. Have you seen ONE WINTER UP NORTH by John Owens? It’s a wordless book about a family who spends time at the boundary waters in winter. Beautiful book.

I haven't! I'll have to check it out.

Great! There's also one called ONE SUMMER UP NORTH, which is equally beautiful, and makes me want to vacation at the boundary waters.

Have you ever been?

I've vacationed pretty far up the north shore of Lake Superior (one of my favorite places on Earth), but have never been to the Boundary Waters.

If you’re willing to do to do it — canoe or kayak, along with some serious portaging — it’s worth going at least once in your life. It’s almost indescribable.

I'm willing. Just gotta convince the hubby!

Katy and the Big Snow is so so good. We’ve been reading the Secret of Helmersbruk Manor while on holiday and enjoying it.

Katy is a classic and yes, so good -- that's my husband's special read with our girls. I just pulled it off the shelf this morning for him for bedtime tonight...

Thank you so much for these recommendations! My daughter and I are about to look for some of these books today! 📚 ❄️💕

Yay! I hope you enjoy.

You always have so many books I haven’t read or heard of which I really appreciate! Can’t wait to read these

Yay! That makes me super happy, Rachel.

Love this! ❄️ ⛄️

Oh, maybe this newsletter is the reason our library copy of Tracks in the Snow wasn't able to be renewed, lol. Good thing we have the library board games for a few more days yet.

One of our all-time favorites — I’ll keep that book forever.

Hooray for more books about winter. I returned all of our holiday/Christmas books before we left for vacation and look forward to returning to these holds when we return. I'm ready to celebrate winter and not just Christmas (I adore Christmas but when it is over, I am done -- is that just me?). Bring on the snow (and these books).

It's absolutely not just you. I love Christmas, but when it's over, I'm 100% okay with that. (I always take all my decorations down before New Year's, so I can go back to work without it all hanging over my head, but this year I did it all on Dec 26th, I am just so ready to move on.)

I'm glad it isn't just me. I did the same on the 26th and felt great about it.

I put so many things on hold! So very excited to check out new books for our book bin.

Expand full comment

Yay! I love being the cause of an overflowing holds list 😊

How do you keep track of the books you loved from year to year? I have seasonal bins I love to pull out, but also, we can't own them all! And then I forget to check them out the next year! Our girls DELIGHT in the seasonal bins still (5, 5, and 7!) but I think I forget what else we might want to check out.

I have a shelf and a bookcase (in a closet) dedicated solely to seasonal books -- I wrote a post about how I store all our books, including these, if that's of interest: https://canweread.substack.com/p/how-can-we-read-storing-books-and-d39

We have so many titles I really don't need to check any out of the library anymore, but when I did, I kept a notebook. It wasn't complicated. (And I have a problem where I think we *can* own them all 😂)

OOH will click through and read.
